Suboshi put a hand on either side of his angel and pushed himself to his feet. He dusted the snow from his hair. "My name is Suboshi. I wonder what an army of angels would protect..." He pondered this a moment as he stared down at his own angel. "If its an army then they would be fighting for something...but being angels they wouldn't exactly want anyone to die in the fight...That wouldn't be a very effective fight. The angels would lose." Suboshi sighed. "Maybe its better if there isn't an army, then they won't have to lose." Suboshi may have been a ruthless killer but even he didn't think he would be good for an angel to get killed.

His mind was working a little too hard on someting as simple as snow angels, but war and fighting was all Suboshi had ever known and so this all was a logical train of thought for him. "What else do you do in the snow?"

"Suboshi... It's very nice to meet you, Suboshi."

He watched the younger boy for a moment and then nodded slowly in thought. "An army doesn't necessarily signify a war. An army can be used for defensive maneuvers. I would imagine that they'd be protecting people. Angels are guardians, after all. Though there are books that speak of angels as brave and valiant warriors."

Tapping the base of his chin, he tilted his head to the side, "You could see them either way. Fighting for protection. Wishing to protect without the raising of arms. It's entirely based on personal perspective."

"...As for..." He was turned onto the idea of other things to do in the snow. He'd likely roll around in it, but perhaps that wasn't something he should share with a kid. It could be seen as a bad influence, he assumed, "...Snow balls. You can make snow balls and throw them at people. And there are people skating out there as well." He lifted a hand and gestured toward the skating rink that the captain had brought up.

Suboshi was still stuck on the thought of his angel army. "If they were in Kutou..they would be forced to fight in order to conquer. Its good that they would be here where there isn't allowed to be any wars."

A sinister glint suddenly came to Suboshi's eyes. "Snowballs? So you could throw them at the people on the skates and make them fall down?" He was greatly amused by the image in his head and bent down to start forming some snowballs.

L's jaw dropped, but only for a moment. This kid was something else, wasn't he? He actually wanted to throw snowballs at people and knock them down? Seriously? Seriously serious? He found himself pausing and then chuckling a little.

"Well, we could, but I'm not sure that's the best thing to do. They might not appreciate that," he replied.

Suboshi looked down at the snowball in his hand. He had made it quite large and compact, one that would certainly hurt upon impact much like his ryuuseisui used to do. "Ah..yeah probably right. Aniki would have scolded me for that too.." He stood up, snowball still in hand. He looked around until he found an empty wall and then chucked the snowball as hard as he could at the surface, watching with glee as it disintigrated upon impact.

He dusted off his hands and turned back to L, still smiling. "Okay then...I'm not sure I'd be a very good skater so I think I will skip that activity. What else do you do in the snow?"

L helped himself up finally and brushed the idle snow from his rather loose-fitting clothes. "Hm... I imagine if Yagami was here, or Misa, or even Takada-ko that one of them would have some other ideas. Honestly, I didn't do much except snow angels and rolling around in it."

He shook his head, "Not that I'm saying you should do the latter. I was a bit of a strange child. Quite a bit, actually." L smiled a little and looked over to Suboshi and offered a light sigh. "You don't have snow where you come from then?"

Suboshi shrugged and sat back down in the snow, picking it up and letting it escape through his fingers. "I saw snow once in awhile..but never really got a chance to play in it. As a warrior it wasn't right and there just wasn't any time for us to do anything like that. Nakago would have gotten mad and done something bad if he caught me screwing around."

Suboshi looked up at him, "I bet you came from a place like Yui-sama. Did you get to see snow a lot?"

A warrior, L thought to himself. Not everyone can say something like that about themselves.

Suboshi must have had difficult times. At least, wherever it was that he came from. L assumed it wasn't from the same era. He'd seen a great many things in his lifetime thus far, and it seemed the ship, Elysium Cruiser, was not against harboring these types of people.

"Yui-sama, hm? Well... Depends on where your Yui-sama was from," he began thoughtfully. He stepped towards the median between the ice skaters and the snow angels he and Suboshi had left behind. He considered the places he lived, and where he'd stayed. He'd seen quite a bit of snow in that respect. "I have seen quite a bit of it. The older you get, the less it seems to fascinate you. I would imagine adults find themselves too busy in the real world to appreciate such simple wonders."

Suboshi nodded as he started to make small snowballs. "I guess that explains a lot. When we went to the snow countries the other seishi didn't seem to care about it much and many of the soldiers complained about fighting in the cold. They seemed to just want it to go away."

Suboshi started to stack up the little snowballs. "Yui-sama's world was very strange. I was only there once and only for a few hours but I didn't like it very much. This place is like her world, and I don't like it very much here either...well its getting better but it is still a very confusing place."

L looked over to him for a moment and then turned his attention back onto the ice that was gathering odd types of attention: a rather happy-looking boy with hair in his face, a tall elf gliding over the snow with a small feminine-looking person. The winter season certainly brought about all sorts of people apparently.

"Adults don't really have the time or patience to deal with those things. Not all adults are like this, though," he commented with a smile. "There are some adults who retain the innocence adolescents have. Like you. You've got a lot of that innocence about you."

Then he turned to Suboshi and furrowed his eyebrows, "You must be remarkably new to the ship then. Is that the case?"

Suboshi grinned a bit sheepishly, "ah..well..not that new..but I hide in the room most of the time. I've been here over a year but I have a tendency to get myself in trouble. I broke one of the rising platform things...and the talking box in the room...Yui-sama or Chichiri typically made sure I stayed out of trouble. Sometimes I go to the park. Thats the only place I really feel comfortable and once in awhile the food places."

Suboshi looked up at L. "I'm sixteen, how old are you?"

A trouble-maker, hm? Well, it wasn't like L wasn't one himself -- not that he'd outwardly admit it. Not yet, anyway. Not until he grew a little closer to Suboshi. If ever.

"It's better to go around and acquaint yourself, with the environment, if not the people," L commented. Even he had gone and done that.

A brief amount of surprise fell over his face at the inquiry and then he smiled, "I'm twenty-five, though I suppose I don't look it, what with the way I act, how I dress, and my general look."

Suboshi nodded and poked at his snowballs. "Yeah..but I don't like the stuff in this place. Its too confusing. I get so frustrated with some of the things in this world and thats when bad things happen...I don't mean to do it!" He picked up one of the snowballs and crushed it in his hand. "I wouldn't have thought you were that old, especially since you played in the snow. No one that age back home would have done that. What do you do back where you live?"

"I don't think anyone would accuse you of doing something intentional, Suboshi-kun. The people here are strange, but not exactly that barbaric," he admitted.

L considered that maybe he wasn't that old, after all. If Light hadn't killed him, how old would he be? He didn't know. He didn't know how long things had gone on before he was caught. Then again, he obviously wasn't caught because he was still wandering around. On a ship. In space. No. Yagami Light wasn't caught at all.

"Hm? What do I do?"

He didn't feel right telling him of his great endeavors as a detective. So he thought he'd go with what he did in Tou-oh. "I played tennis. With my free time. I was a student."

Suboshi picked up another snowball. "A student? Like Yui-sama! Did you go to a school and learn all kinds of interesting things? I bet it was fun to go and be around all those people that are the same age as you. I don't know if I would like sitting around listening to someone talk all day though. I didn't even like doing what Nakago told me to do."

He tossed the snowball at the wall, watching it smash to pieces. "I don't know what tennis is. Was it fun?"

He tried to remember what his schooling was like. He supposed it was all right. It was more bearable having Light with him, and with the one time of meeting Misa too. Well, the first meeting, before he found out that she was the second Kira.

"It's not such a big deal. Academic tutelage has always been somewhat simple for me. I tied with another student for the highest score on the entrance exam." L appeared so frail, so fragile, and so absurd. It was hard to imagine that he was a smart man. Hard to imagine, but definitely true.

"They have tennis on this deck somewhere. Likely in the gym." The same gym that had the scary taebo teacher. He'd only gone once and that was to scout the area. "You have... rackets, stringed implements that hit a ball over a net and to the opponent. It's pretty straight forward. I find it enjoyable, but it's also a bit difficult. Very time and energy-consuming."

Suboshi nodded as he listening. "Entrance exam? I think I remember hearing Yui-sama talk about that...you do that to get into school right? I guess they were pretty hard. Sometimes I saw Yui-sama reading school books while she was here. I didn't really understand any of it. What is a gym?" He really had been spending too much time in his room. Even the talking box wasn't enough to educate him on all the new things in this world. "I think I walked past a building with that written on it once...is that all you do there is play hit balls? Why do you need a building just to do that?"

L leaned back against the smaller wall for the skating rink that the captain had put up. "Entrance exams are required to be passed in order to gain access to attending a school. Not all places have them, but some do. You're exactly right, Suboshi-kun. How very impressive your knowledge is."

Then he smiled a little as he looked over to his companion, "A gym isn't just for tennis. You can do other things there. It's for playing sports. It's for increasing your muscular structure and eliminating body fat. It's for passing time, basically."

Suboshi looked down at his stomach, "Maybe I should go to the gym. Since coming here I haven't had to fight or train like I used to. Maybe I am getting fat...or if nothing else I am probably losing muscle." He flexed his arm and poked at the muscle. "its funny...I was always sick and not very strong but when I had my powers I felt stronger. Now...I'm back to being not very strong and I don't like it." He perked up as a sudden thought hit him. "I could go to the gym and make myself stronger so that I don't need my powers to protect Yui-sama!"

He slouched a little. "Then again...she doesn't need protecting here because no one has powers and can hurt her. So it would just be a waste of time. And since I can't go back...I guess I don't really need to be strong anymore."

Suboshi tossed another snowball at the wall. "maybe I'll just go and see this tennis thing."

As L watched him, he couldn't help thinking that he didn't look fat or anything like that. Sure, he wasn't the most muscular person in the world, but that didn't make him far, per se. Then his ears seemed to perk up when he heard the word 'power'. Yes, he was well aware that there were those who held some kind of special power, be it magic or something else of that nature. Yet those abilities were taken by the captain and not be acted upon. Apparently.

"Muscle isn't everything. It's important to sharpen your wits as well," L replied rather matter-of-factly. "You can use more than simply your fists or magical powers to protect those you care about. It might take a little more work, but it's certainly doable."

Suboshi looked up at him, "Did you have any powers? Where I was only the seishi had powers and Yui-sama said no one in her world had any powers. I use to like fighting but sometimes I got alittle carried away...and careless. It was still fun though. How would I sharpen my wit? Is it useful to have a sharp wit here? Does it require going to the gym?"

Heh. Powers, L thought to himself. The only power I really have is the one to put wanted criminals where they belong. Likely in the electric chair.

His expression softened a little, "No. I don't have any powers. Not of the ones you speak anyway. Again, one's mind can be considered a power, I suppose. Intelligence is a power. Or at least a step to power." Knowledge allowed one to obtain influence. Influence allowed one to take power into his hands. The power to be a god of sorts.

"And when I say sharpening a wit, I mean, working on your senses. Becoming more observant. Those who talk less learn more, because they're using their ears more than their mouths. It's little things like that, that contribute to your own personal assets and make you a better, and sometimes worse, person." He wasn't sure if that was the right thing to say to a youngster, but he wasn't sure if he had any other way of explaining it.

Suboshi scratched the back of his head. He didn't completely understand but he figured it wouldn't hurt to try and sharpen his senses. "Become more observant...talk less...That shouldn't be too hard. I don't talk to many people as it is."

"One's mind is power...My powers were based through using my mind to move things. Does that mean I will be able to sharpen my wit easier?" He wasn't quite grasping the concept but if it meant using his mind then it couldn't be too much different from doing what he was used to doing.

"I'm not saying you talk too much," L corrected himself. "I'm just saying, find a balance. Sometimes you can only learn things by talking. I think you should talk with those you are comfortable with. Don't push yourself farther than necessary. Otherwise, you'll never develop as a person."

He considered Suboshi's other inquiry and he chuckled, "Not quite. That just means you can do something most people can't. Like anything you want to improve about yourself, your mentality has to encourage you. You can't rely on others to do it for you."

Suboshi was lost but he tried to not look completely clueless as he nodded his head. "Got it. Talk with ones I am comfortable with...thats not very many people...and many of the ones I was comfortable with are gone." Suboshi sighed and fell backwards so that he was laying in the snow and looking up at the ceiling. "Sharpening my wit is harder then I thought and I haven't even started yet!" Suboshi wished he had his ryuuseisui back...fighting with that was much easier then this new kind of mental fighting.
